For children and families in crisis who come to Foothill Family for treatment and healing, the holiday season can be a particularly difficult time.
While others in the community are rushing to purchase last-minute gifts and planning festive meals, these families are facing the daily challenges of overcoming trauma or abuse, often while struggling to stretch very limited resources.
Ninety-seven percent of our client children are from poverty level or low-income families that have difficulty meeting even basic needs such as clothing, food, and housing. Without assistance, a great number of these families would not be able to celebrate the holidays at all.
A New Holiday Program Concept
We are excited to announce a new and improved Holiday Program this year, sponsored by the Friends of Foothill Family! With the support of Friends members, scout troops, local community members, businesses, and YOU, this annual Holiday Program will bring holiday gifts of clothes, toys, and necessities to local families in need during the holiday season. But rather than handing clients wrapped gifts in various bulk, the new program allows them to equitably select items that they need and want, empowering them to be providers for their families and to feel like participants in the joy of having selected the gifts that their children will unwrap on Christmas morning.
Here is how it works. As with past years of the Adopt-A-Family program, all of our participant families have been identified by our therapists and staff as the clients with the highest need. Foothill Family has compiled the wish lists from past years to assess the greatest, most common needs and requests from our Adopt-A-Family participants. We have broken them down into four broad categories: clothing, home goods, kitchenware and hygiene and cleaning products. Generous donors like you can purchase items that fall under these categories (click here for the item list) and drop them off at Foothill Family's administrative office at 2500 E. Foothill Boulevard, Suite 300 by Friday, November 11.
The week of December 5, the Friends of Foothill Family will host pop-up shops at each of our Foothill Family centers in Pasadena, Duarte, El Monte (2), and West Covina. Clients will visit our centers and "shop" for items for their family members. Each store will also have a gift wrapping station so that families can wrap their presents to put under their tree!
Other Ways to Participate
In addition, you can support the program through several ways:
1) Make a financial donation.
2) Host a drive at your business workplace, school, or even among friends, for any or all of the categories requested. Contact us to set this up.
3) Consider placing a Giving Tree at your site, with specific "wish onaments" based on the categories requested. Contact us to set this up.
4) Spread the word and tell your friends and family about the program.
About the Program
For many of our children and families, last year's Adopt-A-Family Program provided them with the only holiday gifts they received. The new Holiday Program empowers families and can make all the difference to help them feel supported and cared for during the holidays as they work toward a place of healing and hope for a brighter future.
