New Couples-Based Program Provides Proactive Approach to Relationship Education and Parenting Skills to Strengthen Families

PASADENA, CA – Foothill Family has been awarded $740,000 by the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) of the United States (U.S.) Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to design and implement a program using evidence-based curricula to provide educational workshops and case management services for low-income and underserved couples aged 18 and over, living in the Pomona and San Gabriel Valleys. The PArents Invested in Relationship Success (PAIRS) program fosters healthy, committed, and economically stable families with an aligned and cohesive parenting approach.

PAIRS utilizes evidence-based relationship education and parenting curricula for couples to learn communication skills, conflict resolution, stress and anger management, and parenting skills. Couples will receive relationship and parent coaching, as well as financial literacy, job, and career advancement support.

“Foothill Family is proud to offer a program that helps to strengthen relationships within families,” said Foothill Family Chief Executive Officer Steve Allen. “Through improved family stability, our hope is to increase economic stability and mobility, and support stronger families and healthier children throughout the course of a child’s development.”

The PAIRS Program stems from the lack of resources and programs geared toward couples compounded by the overwhelming need of low-income and socio-economically underserved couples, including those who are facing unemployment or underemployment due to the Covid-19 pandemic and its economic impact.

“PAIRS was born out of a desire to focus on preventative work by proactively providing parents with relationship tools at a vital point in a family’s journey,” said Maria Muniz, Foothill Family Director of Youth and Family Services. “This program will strengthen relationships with the intention of providing children and families happier home environments and brighter futures. Hard work lies ahead but the great outcomes will impact generations to come.”

At no cost to program participants, a full scope of services is provided at Foothill Family sites in Duarte, El Monte, Pasadena, and Covina, and are available in English and Spanish. To be eligible, couples need to be parents or caregivers who are 18 or over and reside in Pomona or San Gabriel Valleys. Open Enrollment begins in April.

New Board Members Bring Diverse Backgrounds and Vision to Lead Foothill Family into its Landmark 95th Year of Service and Community Leadership

 

PASADENA, CA – Foothill Family is thrilled to welcome acclaimed community leaders Chang Liu, Kris Lythgoe, Jessica Meza, and Dr. Ayesha Randall to the Foothill Family Board of Directors. Each was nominated and elected by the Board for their strengths in advocacy, leadership and business acumen. This distinguished group is eager to share their time and talent in support of Foothill Family’s mission to empower children and families through mental health and early childhood development services that advance growth and development.

Cathay Bank parent Cathay General Bancorp named Chang Liu as its new CEO and President in October 2020. Chang, previously Cathay Bank’s President and COO, will succeed Pin Tai, who retired last year. Liu will continue as President and a Director of Cathay Bank, and will be appointed a member of the Cathay General Bancorp board. Chang received a BA in Economics degree at UCLA and has more than 29 years of banking experience.

Television and Theatre Writer/Producer, Kris Lythgoe, is known for creating and producing hit reality television shows such as So You Think You Can Dance and Who Are You. He is CEO of Magic Pictures International and a member of BAFTA and the TV Academy. Son of American Idol Creator and Executive Producer, Nigel Lythgoe, Lythgoe has also created several American pantomimes based upon fairy tales and folklore. Earlier in his career, Lythgoe headed productions of Footloose and The Wedding Singer in the UK, and he most recently produced a Holiday adaptation of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz that premiered in Pasadena, CA. He attended Imperial Service College in the UK and earned an MBA in Business Strategy and Leadership from ARU. 

Jessica Meza is the Instructional Assistant, El Monte City School District. Meza is a Certified Health education Specialist (CHES) and earned a B.S. in Public Health at California State University Los Angeles. Meza is an Early Head Start Health and Services Advisory Committee Member at Foothill Family as well as an Early Head Start Policy Council Member at Foothill Family. Meza participated in Student Leaders in Sexual Education Internship, Alliance Leichtman-Levine Family Foundation Environmental Science High School.

Dr. Ayesha Randall currently serves as a Professor at the LA Trade Technical College. She is a grassroots organizer, community advocate and educational consultant, passionate about creating affirming environments for African-American children. Randall lives in Pasadena with her husband, Louis and daughter, Alicia. In her spare time, she finds pleasure in creating stuff and experiences, spending time with family, shopping at thrift stores and garage sales, participating in LA’s art and culture scene, being in diverse spaces and environments, listening to stories, volunteering in the community, talking and listening to different folks, eating and cooking good food, and enjoying the outdoors with her daughter and Girl Scout troop.  Randall earned her BA at UC Berkeley, a Masters in Education from Harvard and an Ed.D from USC.

Mark Taper Foundation awarded Foothill Family a $75,000 grant, providing significant support for Foothill Family’s vital work in supporting the region’s most underserved families with mental health and social services focused on preventive care and early intervention. Since 2005, Foothill Family has been awarded a total of $300,000 in grant funding from the S. Mark Taper Foundation.

“Deemed an essential business during the current global pandemic, the Foothill Family team has been on the front lines as the need – and demand – for mental health services drastically increased,” said Steve Allen, Foothill Family Chief Executive Officer. “We’re most grateful to receive a grant from this generous foundation which helps provide our most vulnerable families with critical mental health and childcare services.”

With sites in Covina, Duarte, El Monte, Pasadena, Pomona, and West Covina, Foothill Family’s programs positively impact communities in the San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys, Glendale, and Burbank. This grant from the S. Mark Taper Foundation will help provide mental health and school-based counseling for children, child abuse prevention and treatment, domestic violence prevention and treatment, early childhood development programs, services for pregnant teens and their babies, family counseling, and youth development.

PASADENA, CA – Foothill Family could never have predicted a global pandemic would make the need for a community-based mental health agency more urgent and necessary than ever. Deemed an essential business in supporting the mental wellness of thousands of clients across Los Angeles County, most notably in the San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys, the agency kept its doors open and quickly shifted its practices.

“We are in the second year of a five-year strategic plan, and the work we did to shape and deploy the plan reinforced our solid footing when the unexpected occurred with the onset of California’s ‘safer from home’ mandate in response to COVID-19,” said Steve Allen, Foothill Family Chief Executive Officer. “Our diligent focus on infrastructure and sustainability, in addition to the foundational focus on programs and people, really allowed the pivot from face-to-face client care to shift one hundred percent to telephone and telehealth services.”

As the world transitioned into a new season sequestered at home from work and school, Foothill Family shifted into a new gear – while the doors to their family centers in Pasadena, Duarte, Covina, and two in El Monte remained open with limited staffing, ninety percent of their employees were set up to establish work stations from home and trained on a number of online tools previously foreign to a high touch industry. Suddenly, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and virtual conferencing joined the lexicon and high touch almost instantaneously morphed into high tech. Through it all, Foothill Family has been not only able to continue serving its clients in creative and innovative ways, the agency was also positioned to accept new clients.

“It became clear very quickly that the needed response to this public health crisis was going to create a burden on people that would result in mental health challenges,” said Tami Mitsumori-Miller, Foothill Family Chief Clinical Officer. “Suddenly people are isolated and alone, or isolated with someone volatile, or isolated without a teacher or aide to observe and report concerning behavior. Add the stress of financial insecurity and unemployment to that and you find a lot of already vulnerable people in even more precarious situations. Accepting new clients was vital at this moment in time.”

Individuals and families were thrust into the unknown at all socio-economic levels. The ability to rely on donor events to fundraise quickly disappeared and is indeterminate for the foreseeable future. Philanthropic giving across the non-profit sphere paused as people watched the stock market plunge. The uncertainty of it all created a vacuum of time and space that began to fill with a mix of anxiety and creativity.

Stepping up to fill the void were a number of public and private foundations who quickly shifted or advanced giving in response to the moment. Foothill Family received leadership support from California Community Foundation; Carl and Roberta Deutsch Foundation; The Atlas Family Foundation, The Ahmanson Foundation, and Capital Group Companies Charitable Foundation.

“We are incredibly fortunate to partner with foundations who are in the position to respond to the needs of communities who are highly impacted by this public health crisis,” said Lara Lund, Foothill Family Director of Foundation Grants. “We are grateful for their recognition of Foothill Family’s role in helping to meet those needs through mental health services and early childhood development programs.”

High-level support for COVID-19 response and agency operations was also received from Pasadena Child Health Foundation; Dorrance Family Foundation; Pasadena Community Foundation; Carrie Estelle Doheny Foundation; Anonymous Fund of the Orange County Community Foundation; Tikun Olam Foundation; Wells Fargo Foundation; and Niagara Cares.

SAN GABRIEL VALLEY, Calif. – In the main auditorium of the Jeff Seymour Family Center on an overcast Saturday morning, six five-year-olds are the center of attention, but don’t quite know it. The caps made of construction paper and the oversized Foothill Family t-shirts used as a makeshift gowns don’t exactly convey a traditional graduation, but that is, in fact, what the celebration about. These children and their parents are the first class of graduates from Foothill Family’s Healthy Families America program.
